IB Economics

IB Economics

The best alternative to A-level Economics.

IB Economics is an optional social science subject that students can take in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It can be studied as an optional Standard Level (SL) module in Year 12 or as a Higher Level (HL) module over the full two-year Diploma Programme.

IB Economics covers similar content to A-level Economics courses but differs in two important respects. Firstly, IB Economics allows students to explore economic theory through an examination of six real-world issues using nine key economic themes (e.g. scarcity, efficiency, sustainability). Secondly, in addition to taking exams (two for SL and three for HL), IB Economics students are required to prepare a portfolio of three commentaries based on different parts of the syllabus focused on real-world economic issues drawn from published news media sources.

FAQ

Common questions

  • How long is a typical session?

Online sessions are 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Home visits are 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Most A-level students find 60 minutes a week plus extra around mocks and exams works well.

  • Where does tutoring take place?

Either at the student's home for in-person sessions across south west London, central London and Surrey, or online via video call for students anywhere in the UK and overseas.

  • What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule a session without charge. Less than 24 hours' notice is charged at the full session rate. I am flexible around illness and emergencies.

  • Do I need to commit to weekly sessions?

No. Many students book weekly through the year. Others book intensive blocks before mocks or final exams. I tailor frequency to the student's timeline and goals.

  • What areas do you cover for home visits?

South west London, central London and parts of Surrey. The areas covered page lists every town in detail. For students further afield, I tutor online.
